The types of dental implants in current use are described with comments on the various designs, the materials of which the implants are made, the patient situations for which they are used, and the age range of patients treated. The training background of the various clinicians involved is mentioned and comparisons are made between the United States, Japan and Central Europe. Predictions for the future use of implants are made and areas for future research are indicated, based upon deficiencies in our present knowledge.
