The William J. Gies Foundation for the Advancement of Dentistry of the American Dental Education Association

Fiscal Year 2004 Annual Report

In fiscal year 2004, the William J. Gies Foundation completed the transition from a private to a public foundation. The transition included determining new lead officers for the Board of Trustees. Prof. Pamela Zarkowski, University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry, became chair of the board, and Dr. Richard Valachovic, American Dental Education Association (ADEA) Executive Director, became president. The foundation also received an unqualified clean audit for fiscal year 2003.

The foundation is pleased that Dr. David Satcher, former U.S. surgeon general and director, National Center for Primary Care at the Morehouse School of Medicine, agreed to be the chair of the ADEA-Gies Foundation Annual Fund. More than $125,000 has been raised in gifts and pledges from individuals throughout the first two years of fundraising. Grant requests totaling $24,000 for the 2004 cycle included:

The Board of Trustees of the ADEA Gies Foundation held a planning retreat April 7–8, 2004, in Washington, DC. The goals of the retreat were to affirm the strategic directions of the foundation; develop a short-term action plan to guide the foundation’s work over the next two years; clarify the roles and responsibilities of the foundation board and staff; and strengthen relationships among foundation board members. Participants discussed attributes of the foundation’s past and agreed that the following qualities of the foundation should be retained: a focus on improving the oral health of the public, the importance of education, and funding for educational projects and programs in dental schools that foster learning, knowledge, and teaching; the ability to leverage the impact and stature of the Gies name; and a willingness to make smaller grants to a variety of different types of projects, including the current awards that recognize scholarship and outstanding contributions to education and research. The board also hopes to increase the prominence of the Gies name and the foundation’s name; increase the size of the endowment; establish partnerships with other organizations to support its mission and goals; serve as a voice for professional ethics and values; and establish an effective public relations/communications capacity to increase the visibility of the foundation.
