The Ethics of Leadership*

In academic dentistry, leaders are called upon as teachers, role models, and mentors for those who will enter the dental and allied dental professions. Administrators and faculty must exemplify ethics and values that sustain both the academic community and the professions. Among the challenges faced by academic leaders are those associated with power, duties of administrators, faculty, and students, and the relationship of leaders to followers. This interactive Signature Series program will integrate ethical theory and leadership to explore what constitutes morally responsible leadership in an academic context. The program will include discussions of "moral psychology," the study of how people think about morality and are motivated by it. Participants will consider questions such as the following: "what is morality?" "what features of a situation are morally relevant?" "why should we be moral?" "what kind of good is morality?" "why do leaders behave immorally?" Specific objectives of the program are to 1) understand the concept of moral psychology; 2) identify and understand how ethical problems take on a particular guise in leadership contexts; 3) develop a framework for ethical decision making; and 4) consider common ethical challenges in an academic context and how to address them.

Dr. Price is Associate Professor and Acting Associate Dean at the Jepson School of Leadership Studies, University of Richmond. He specializes in leadership ethics, moral psychology, social, political, and legal theory, and applied epistemology. A philosopher with grounding in politics and psychology, Dr. Price focuses his teaching and research interests on applied ethics. In addition to leadership ethics, he has taught business ethics, medical ethics, and contemporary moral issues and studied politics on a John M. Olin Fellowship at the University of Oxford. He holds a Ph.D. in Philosophy (University of Arizona), an M.Litt. in Politics (University of Oxford), and an M.A. in Philosophy (University of Arizona). His article "The Ethics of Authentic Transformational Leadership" recently appeared in the Leadership Quarterly, and he wrote the entries for "Ethics," "Philosophy," and "Dirty Hands" in Sage Publications’ Encyclopedia of Leadership. In addition, Dr. Price has published articles in Philosophical Studies, Criminal Justice Ethics, the Southern Journal of Philosophy, the American Philosophical Quarterly, the Journal of Political Philosophy, Journal of Value Inquiry and Leadership and Organizational Development. He is coeditor of The International Library of Leadership and author of Understanding Ethical Failures in Leadership: The Moral Psychology of Exception Making, forthcoming from Cambridge University Press. Dr. Price serves as chair of the scholarship section of the general learning community at the International Leadership Association (2003–04).

Dr. Haden is ADEA Associate Executive Director and Director of the ADEA Center for Educational Policy and Research. He coordinates and contributes to the programming of the ADEA Leadership Institute.
