Greetings and Overview

Greetings

Frank A. Catalanotto, D.M.D., ADEA President, 2004–05  ; Marcia A. Boyd, D.D.S., M.A., L.H.D.[hon], FACD, Chair, Annual Session Planning Committee

Dear Members and Other Friends of ADEA:

On behalf of the ADEA Board of Directors, I am very pleased to invite you to the Association’s 82nd Annual Session and Exhibition, March 5–9, 2005, in Baltimore.

The theme for this year’s meeting, "Access and Diversity: Educating for Change," is the same mantra that has guided much of my past year’s activities as ADEA President. On the national scene, there has been much discussion and progress on issues such as advocacy, access to care, national licensure, and diversity. ADEA and the American Association for Dental Research have discussed more collaborative advocacy efforts with the goal of increasing the effectiveness of our messages about the importance of dental education, research, and service. The American Dental Association continues its focus on access to care and has published a white paper to guide future improvements in access to care at the state and local level. In 2004, we have seen the publication of two important documents related to access and diversity: the Institute of Medicine Report, "In the Nation’s Compelling Interest," and the Sullivan Commission Report, "Missing Persons: Minorities in the Health Professions." We have initiated discussions with both the American Dental Association and the American College of Dentists on the ethics of access to care. Our Annual Session will continue a focus on these themes. A variety of program formats will address issues such as cultural competency, access to care, and the ethics of health care. You will have some difficult decisions to make in your choice of activities because of the richness of the overall program!

This year is also an important transition event in terms of our interactions with colleagues in the American Association for Dental Research. For the first time, faculty and staff from both organizations who are involved in annual session planning activities met and agreed on a series of collaborative academic and social activities on the overlapping days of both meetings, on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, March 8, 9, and 10. This is in preparation for a total overlap of meeting days in Orlando in 2006. Leadership in both organizations hope that this will be a prelude to even stronger interactions in the future between the two organizations.

The ADEA Board of Directors, the members of our Annual Session Planning Committee, our hard-working staff, and a host of volunteer faculty and others who will be presenting at this meeting look forward to seeing you in Baltimore. There will be numerous opportunities to grow, to learn, to interact, to collaborate, and to participate in academic and social activities. Welcome!

Dear Members and Other Friends of ADEA:

On behalf of the Annual Session Planning Committee, I am pleased to join President Catalanotto in inviting you to the 82nd Annual Session and Exhibition in Baltimore, Maryland.

Once again, this year’s Annual Session programming will provide you with a rich depth and scope of opportunities for personal and professional growth. Choose from among FDWs, Lunch and Learns, Symposia, Section and SIG programs, poster sessions, TechnoFair/Expo, and commercial and educational exhibits. This degree of variety will allow you to create a meaningful and personalized meeting experience. You can tailor your activities to meet all of your objectives by using the online personal itinerary planner, available at www.ADEA.org.

This year in discussion with the American Association of Dental Research (AADR), a more integrated program has been planned on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday morning. Several excellent Joint Symposia on topics of shared interest will provide opportunities for greater interaction with AADR colleagues. Please note the strong student and new faculty focus as well as special interest tracks. Selected program integration in Baltimore with AADR is just the beginning. Next year’s meeting in Orlando will see the two meetings fully overlapped—an exciting and progressive challenge!

For the 2005 Annual Session, the fact that Baltimore is the home of the National Dental Museum is only the beginning of what the city has to offer dental educators. The city’s historic waterfront is one of the most beautiful in the country, with numerous restaurant, cultural, and social options within walking distance of the convention center and our hotels.

The Annual Session Planning Committee expresses its thanks to the corporations, speakers, volunteers, and staff who work together to make this meeting one of the most important ADEA member benefits. We look forward to seeing you in Baltimore!
