There is renewed interest in the scientific literature on the relationships among nutrition, diet, oral health and oral medicine, and infectious and systemic diseases. Also, numerous associations between poor oral health and increased risk of systemic diseases have been reported. This book’s authors and editors, internationally recognized leaders in the fields of nutrition and dentistry, have created a unique entity in the realm of nutrition and oral medicine: a text that enables the reader to learn both dietary and nutrition suggestions for patients who have poor oral health or systemic diseases or both.

The book is divided into five sections. The early chapters lay a firm scientific foundation for the practical recommendations of the latter chapters. The information is extensive, practice-based, and in-depth, covering the most important aspects of the effects of diet and nutrition on development, growth, maintenance, disease prevention, and disease treatment in the oral cavity and pharynx.

This text is very well organized, as well as being comprehensive, factual, up-to-date, readable, and concisely presented. The reader is aided in learning by the unique appendices, including the latest Dietary Reference Intake charts, oral nutrition risk-assessment tools, a body mass index table, a cranial nerve assessment chart, and diet education tools, along with numerous diagrams and tables throughout the book. While this text emphasizes prevention, it also presents clear and concise information necessary for treating both simple and complex oral medicine and nutritional complications that frequently arise as a result of poor oral health and systemic diseases and their pharmacological therapeutics.

The chapters are logically organized to provide the reader with all of the basics in both oral health and nutrition. The first section, "Synergistic Relationships Between Nutrition and Health," includes a comprehensive discussion of the terms "diet quality" and "nutrition." The first chapter emphasizes the impact of diet and nutrition on general health status and goes on to present dietary guidelines for optimum health. The next three chapters focus on pregnancy, child nutrition, and oral health; age-related changes in oral health status; and environmental, ethnicity, and cultural factors that are important to the clinician and educators as well. The second section, "Synergistic Relationships Between Oral and General Health," contains two well-designed and well-written chapters emphasizing the interrelationships among medications, nutrition, diet, and oral health. The chapters on oral-systemic disease relationships are comprehensively presented and well organized.

However, what is most unique about this book is that it does not stop with presentations of the various nutritional deficiency and oral-systemic disease relationships, but goes on to present dietary, nutritional, and botanical solutions that have been scientifically proven to be beneficial in both oral and systemic diseases.

Section three, "Relationship Between Nutrition and Oral Health," includes chapters on oral consequences of compromised nutritional well-being, nutritional consequences of oral conditions and diseases, complementary and alternative medical practices and their impact on oral and nutritional health, and emerging research and practices regarding nutrition, diet, and oral medicine. Although the chapter "Complementary and Alternative Medical Practices" include some therapies not recognized as the standard of care by the American Dental Association, it is well written and informative.

Section four, "Select Diseases and Conditions with Known Nutrition and Oral Health Consequences," includes chapters on diabetes mellitus, HIV, autoimmune diseases, osteoporosis, and wound healing. These chapters focus on oral conditions that result from the above conditions, along with therapies and dietary suggestions that can be found in their respective chapters and the appendices

Section five, "Education and Practice," contains two chapters: "Approaches to Oral Nutrition Health Risk Assessment," which includes effective tools for patient evaluation, and "Oral Medicine and Nutrition Education," which emphasizes the importance of nutrition education as a core component in curriculum and continuing education.

This book is highly recommended to the readers of the Journal of Dental Education. It is well suited for clinicians (dental, medical, and dietician), educators, and dental and hygiene students and will prove most useful. It should be purchased as a valuable addition to the professional library.
