The purpose of this book is to teach periodontal instrumentation to dental hygienists. It is very thorough and very well designed—in a word, a superb textbook.

It assumes no previous knowledge, which allows anyone regardless of background to build a knowledge base. A very nice feature is that the headings and the key material really stand out because of the way the interior of the book was designed. The use of orange for headings, drawing, and charts is very effective. The written descriptions are short with an adjacent drawing or picture or chart. All of this makes it very easy to see the points that the author is making: the reader does not have to dig for the information; it jumps out.

Another strong aspect of the book’s design is a practical focus section after most modules. This is a feature I have not seen before, but it should be used in more textbooks. The sections include pictures relating to the skills taught in that module and ask the students to identify what is wrong with that picture. There is also a skill application section at the end of each module that provides practical ideas on how to practice the skills taught.

This book covers an extremely wide variety of topics. One has the feeling that anything having to do with the practice of dental hygiene in the area of periodontics will be found here and that discussion of each of these topics will be thorough. I can think of no topics that were left out and no topics not fully discussed. The book is so thorough that it even includes topics I did not expect, but was delighted to discover. Examples include a chapter on musculoskeletal disorders seen in health care providers and their prevention, a discussion of charting recession that is better than any periodontal textbook, and a section on building up hand strength.

This book also does a very good job of teaching the use of the horizontal stroke. It shows effective use of jacquettes, files, universal curettes, and specific area curettes. There is a good chapter toward the end of the book with charts of common instrumentation problems and their solutions. The ultrasonic chapter is also very useful.

One has no doubt that students who use this book will receive what they need to become thoroughly trained and extremely knowledgeable. Although designed for training dental hygienists, the book is an excellent source of material on a broad range of topics and would be an excellent resource to assist in the training of dental students and periodontists as well.
