This book is a superb reference source for anyone interested in the surgical placement and osseointegration of endosteal implants. Students and experienced dental providers alike will appreciate the bone histology review provided in the books first two chapters related to pertinent cells of bone formation and loss. The text smoothly transfers its next focus towards maxillary and mandibular bone anatomy and quality found in various regions, including the implications for implant placement. Various prediagnostic tests such as dental radiographs, magnetic resonance imaging, and computerized tomography are discussed, as well as the less common peri- and postoperative use of resonance frequency analysis and periotesting.
Chapters three through ten concentrate on factors related to compromised or non-ideal bony implant sites, the placement and longevity of implants in compromised bone, and current methods to improve the quality of compromised hard tissues. The sixth chapter also delves into corrective surgical techniques towards increasing the quantity of bone available within individual surgical sites for implants. The bone quality improvements discussion is detailed and mentioned at the cellular, structural, and vascular levels. The text following chapter six also discusses this issue in further detail based on demographic groupings of age and irradiation history. Strategies regarding bone regeneration and effects of irradiation to bone healing are detailed throughout, with special emphasis in chapters seven and ten.
Many readers will find this book an excellent resource of current theories regarding bone development and qualitative changes, practical surgical applications and expectations of implant placement in compromised sites, and intervention techniques currently employed to aid bone quality. Additionally, current research and theoretical future avenues for investigations are discussed in a logical, systematic manner throughout the text. The book is overflowing with colorfully concise illustrations that help summarize the material.
Dr. Watzek has written a superb text that maintains a fluid and understandable style throughout. Research studies, illustrations, photographs, and other diagnostic aids are successfully utilized throughout to aid reader comprehension. I would recommend Implants in Qualitatively Compromised Bone to any reader who is interested in the topic of dental implants.
