Annual Report for Fiscal Year 2005
Fiscal year 2005 marked the first full year as a public foundation for ADEAs William J. Gies Foundation for the Advancement of Dentistry. The Board of Trustees of the Foundation pursued the strategic directions affirmed in the previous year and began to implement the plan to guide and expand the foundations work in support of dental and allied dental education and research. Dr. David Satcher, former U.S. surgeon general and director of the National Center for Primary Care at the Morehouse School of Medicine, continued to chair the ADEA/Gies Foundation Annual Fund, which now has raised more than $175,000 since its inception. The foundation also received an unqualified clean audit for fiscal year 2004.
Grant awards totaling $61,500 for the 2005 cycle included:
- ADEA/William J. Gies Dental Research Scholarship
Approval of $35,000 to ADEA to fully fund a second research scholarship. This would provide enough funding to run the program concurrently at two different schools. The total scholarship to each school is $35,000 over a four-year period. By the end of the fourth year, a total of four students will have participated in the program at each school.
- ADEA/William J. Gies Educational Fellowship
Funded at $10,000, this fellowship provides for a senior dental educator to work with ADEA staff in the Center for Educational Policy and Research on a major policy issue facing dental education. The residency is for up to three months. Project areas have included survey and recommendations regarding dental school faculty shortages; the scholarship of teaching; international dental education; clinical licensure reform; ADEA Leadership Institute outcomes study; and the development of competencies for dental faculty (2005).
- Workshop on the Ethics of Access to Oral Health Care
$5,000 was committed to support a workshop on the ethics of access to oral health care. The workshop, which includes collaboration with the American College of Dentists (ACD) and the American Dental Association (ADA), will build upon the 2003 ADEA Presidents Commission Report, "Improving the Oral Health of All Americans: Roles and Responsibilities of Academic Dental Institutions." The commissions work was sponsored in part by the foundation.
- Editorial Awards Program
Approval of funding to the American Association of Dental Educators (AADE) for $4,500: $1,500 for support of the presentation ceremony and overhead for AADE and $3,000 in awards.
- Periodontal and Oral Surgery Awards
$1,000 for outstanding periodontal educator in conjunction with the American Association of Periodontology; $1,000 for outstanding oral surgery educator in conjunction with the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
- Gies Lecture Series
The William J. Gies Lecture Series includes two lectures funded at $6,000 in total, one that occurs at the Greater New York Dental Meeting and the second that takes place at the Chicago Dental Society meeting or other likewise major meetings.
The Grants Committee and the Board have approved new grant proposal guidelines, which will be published by mid-2005 and disseminated to potential applicants. The foundations grants program will continue to focus on improving the oral health of the public through the support of dental education institutions, the encouragement of lifelong learning; and the recognition of scholarly achievement, professional ethics and values, and publications in dental education and research.
Major goals for the future are to increase the visibility of the foundation, enlarge our Board of Trustees, expand our resource development efforts, and increase the capacity of our grants program.
