Preface to the Elders’ Oral Health Summit Proceedings

This issue of the Journal of Dental Education presents the proceedings of the Elders’ Oral Health Summit, designed and conducted to examine the state of the science in access to and outcomes of care for elders and to formulate a Research Agenda and Plan of Action for the future of elders’ oral health. Completion of this task is only a beginning. We invite readers of this issue to examine the articles carefully and to use the Research Agenda and Plan of Action to focus their own efforts to improve elders’ oral health.
A project of this nature is a daunting task, made possible by the efforts of many institutions and people. The support of Boston University, the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), the National Institute on Aging (NIA), and the Office of Research on Women’s Health was essential. The generous corporate support of GlaxoSmithKline and DENTSPLY International made the federal grant possible and rounded out the funding required to conduct the summit.
