The William J. Gies Foundation for the Advancement of Dentistry of the American Dental Education Association, Inc. (ADEAGies Foundation)

Annual Report for Fiscal Year 2006

Fiscal year 2006 witnessed the continued progress of ADEA’s William J. Gies Foundation for the Advancement of Dentistry. The Foundation’s Board of Trustees’ review of general strategic and business planning issues resulted in adoption of a new mission statement, as follows:
The mission of the ADEAGies Foundation is to enhance the oral health of the public through programs which support dental education, research, leadership, and recognition.

The ADEAGies Annual Fund, under the chairmanship of Dr. David Satcher, former U.S. Surgeon General and current Director of the National Center for Primary Care at the Morehouse School of Medicine, has now raised more than $375,000 since its inception. Plans are under way for next year’s Annual Fund drive, which we hope will benefit from ADEA’s greatly expanded membership base.

In an important initiative, ADEA and the Gies Foundation forged a landmark agreement with Oral Health America, the nation’s premier independent advocacy organization dedicated to improving oral health and the public’s awareness of oral health’s importance to total health. The three organizations are collaborating in a new effort to promote leadership in dental, allied dental, and advanced dental education. The ADEAGies Foundation received over $200,000 from the George H. Whiteley Memorial Foundation, DENTSPLY, Inc., and the Beauchamp Estate to support ADEA’s Leadership Institute for select educators and administrators who show promise for leadership growth.

The Board of Trustees of the ADEAGies Foundation refined and published our grant proposal guidelines and awarded grants totaling $29,000 for the 2006 cycle, including:

The major goals for the ADEAGies Foundation for fiscal 2007 are to further increase the visibility of the foundation and its grants programs, to continue to enlarge our Board of Trustees, and to expand our annual fund and special gifts development efforts in concert with the American Dental Association’s national campaign for dental education.

As Chair of the Board of the William J. Gies Foundation, I am most grateful to the members of the Board for their continuing commitment to the growth, development, and work of the foundation.

Respectfully submitted,

Pamela Zarkowski, J.D.

Chair
