Educating Students About Academic Careers

Carolyn Berbrayer, First-Year Dental Student

Dear Dr. Alvares:

I read with interest Jeffery K. Rupp et al.’s "Dental Students’ Knowledge About Careers in Academic Dentistry" in the October 2006 Journal of Dental Education and would like to congratulate the authors on their timely and important study. Although the authors restricted their conclusions to the population they tested, I believe that dental students’ lack of knowledge about careers in academic dentistry is a universal problem.

This is why McGill University’s Faculty of Dentistry undertook a project to produce a series of video interviews with oral health physicians. Each of the individuals interviewed works within the field of oral health in some way, whether in general practice, university teaching and research, public health, various specialties, forensic dentistry, the military, or professional organizations. In their interviews, the dentists discuss what they enjoy about their professions, what their work entails, and how interested students can go about learning more about each of these career options.

This project was carried out to educate current and potential dental students about career opportunities, especially academic careers, of which they might otherwise not have been aware. The interviews are available in English on the McGill University Faculty of Dentistry website at www.mcgill.ca/dentistry/careers.
