Giulio Preti, M.D., D.D.S., Ph.D., ed. Jennifer Sardo Infirri, trans. New Malden, Surrey, UK: Quintessence, 2008. 224 pp., illustrated, indexed $168.00 hardcover ISBN 978-1-85097-166-5

Dentistry in North America changed dramatically after the concept of osseointegration was introduced in the 1980s. At present, there are numerous prosthodontic treatment options that are supported by extensive research. However, treatment modalities vary or improve rapidly for all dental specialties, and many times we feel overwhelmed when trying to keep up with the literature.

This book will be invaluable for the general practitioner facing the aforementioned challenge. It covers many aspects of the different dental specialties that influence the outcome of a dental rehabilitation.

Each chapter is covered in a very detailed manner by the contributors. The references used by all the authors are extensive, relevant, and current, which makes this text a good tool to keep at the office for consultation. The tables and sidebars presented in each chapter summarize important concepts and highlight the most relevant information from that chapter. The illustrations, as well as the printing and binding, are of prime quality. There is consistency in the different topic presentations, which makes this book simple to read in its entirety.

Another positive aspect of this text is that, before going to the main content, the editor goes through a detailed explanation of the criteria used to critically appraise the dental literature. I found this feature very valuable and its inclusion to be novel in texts. As academicians, we should instill in our students the utilization of the best available literature to treat patients, and this volume is a good model for this practice.

The reader should be aware that there is some discrepancy between the terminology used in this text and that found in classic prosthodontic texts. This is probably because the contents have been translated from the Italian language.

I recommend this book as a consulting tool for academicians and general practitioners alike. It constitutes a good educational tool for both students and general dentists whose main focus is prosthetic dentistry. This text will enable the user to develop a well-thought-out treatment plan for patients in need of a multidisciplinary approach.
