The policies for reprinting Journal of Dental Education articles are set forth below.
GENERAL POLICIES
First 12 Months Following Publication
JDE articles are available by subscription, by pay for access, or by pay per view for 12 months from the first day of the publication month.
After 12 Months Have Elapsed Since Publication
JDE articles published after March 2001 and more than 12 months prior to the current date may be reprinted or distributed free for educational purposes only. The publisher and copyright must be acknowledged.
For instructions regarding JDE articles published during or before March 2001, contact ADEA as described under Authorization for Use below. See also Expiration of Copyright below.
SPECIFIC POLICIES
Author Use
An author may distribute only the final PDF version of an article at his or her discretion at any time after publication. The PDF may be posted on the author's website, placed in an institutional repository, or emailed by the author to interested colleagues.
An author may make and distribute photocopies in any quantity without fee provided that a copyright notice (see below) is printed on the opening page. Finally, an author may include JDE articles with copyright notice in a collection of his or her own works.
Library Use
Specific permission from ADEA is not required at any time after publication for photocopying journal articles or sections of articles for student use if the following conditions are met:
- The library subscribes to the journal.
- Copying is done at the request of the teacher of a course.
- A copyright notice appears on the first page of each copy.
Libraries in noneducational and commercial institutions or libraries transacting interlibrary loans may apply and pay for permission to photocopy JDE articles through the Copyright Clearance Center.
Custom Reprints
You may obtain high quality, bound versions of individual JDE articles suitable for professional use or display in a portfolio. Reprints may be ordered for up to one year after an article has appeared in print. The minimum order quantity is 100, and reprints must be ordered in multiples of 100. To order reprints, contact Sue Kimner at ADEA.
Reprints in Books, Pamphlets, Journals, Magazines, Newspapers, or Newsletters, or Electronic Distribution by CD-ROM, Website, or Email
After 12 months from the date of publication, requests to reprint a JDE article in a collective new work intended for educational or classroom use generally will be granted by ADEA without charge. Requests for use of a specific item from a JDE article (e.g., a chart) will be referred to the article's corresponding author for consideration. A copyright notice must appear on the first page of the article or with the specific item. Apply as described under Authorization for Use below.
Disallowed Use
Permission is never granted for use of JDE for endorsements, implied or otherwise, of products or services, or to use content as part of advertisements or advertising supplements.
Expiration of Copyright
Permission from ADEA is not required if the copyright has expired. Material published prior to 1964 is now in the public domain and may be used without permission. Material published on or after January 1, 1964, has a copyright term of 75 years, during which time ADEA must be contacted for permission to reprint.
Rights for some JDE articles may have reverted to the authors. ADEA reserves the right to redirect any inquiry regarding a JDE article to the corresponding author for final disposition.
